Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Misty asks

Q: I have asthma with MCS so even when I take my meds which I do daily I get attacks.

I have asthma with MCS, adult onset for 10 years I have seen many doctors and yes specialists.  I have tried almost every medicine and I am allergic to many. I do OK on

Pulmicort and Xopenex (nebulizer solution).  However whenever I go out and I am near

fragrance of any kind or chemicals I have an attack. I also do alternative things such as

Acupuncture, Breathing methods and walking, vitamins and herbs. Needless to say my life

is very limited and I have lost many friends as they can not or do not want to be unscented. I know public awareness of this problem is starting to catch on but meanwhile

I stay home a lot. Any ideas???

Hi Misty,

You're right, there's not a lot of public awareness about MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities). I'm glad you've found some relief from medications in controlling your attacks. In wanting to go out into "the world", though, there will always be challenges until they find a cure for MCS. It's hard to control all the many fumes you will encounter, though you can certainly do your best to avoid them.

I'd like to say that the "friends" you say you lost because they don't want to go without fragrance in your presence leads me to think they weren't really your friends in the first place.  But that's neither here nor there.

You might look into local support groups for MCS at your hospital or on the Internet. Here's a place to start:

If you meet other people suffering from MCS, they may have additional suggestions on coping and living with this condition.

To your health,

Kathi
