I have had asthma since the age of 2 years, now for 45 years.

It is a chronic illness/ once diagnosed usually you will always have it.

There are now so so many good medications out from Advair asthma pump to the neubalizer treatment (breathing treatment machine) to Prednizone (steroid pills that help breathing), etc..

Have your family doctor refer you to a pulmonary lung doctor and have all your necessary tests done from the start.

I would also suggest seeing an ear, nose, throat doctor (specialist) and receiving allergy testing as well.  I waited 45 years and just had my allergy testing done.  But I am glad to know that I am allergic to grass, trees, pollen, dust, cats and dogs.; now I have begun allergy shots and continue to look forward to having my asthma improve, improve.

Best of luck..take our advice..we have been there, done that..

May you not go that long before taking care of yourself from the start..the best prevention is the beginning prevention..

Hi there,

If you want to learn about asthma, you'll find tons of great information here at this site. Use the menus on the home page of this site, as well as perusing the various posts by our experts here on the site.

Another great site is the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), which offers a number of helpful downloadable brochures on asthma and allergy topics. If you like reading books, I've found that the Asthma for Dummies book is easy to read and understand. You should be able to find that in your local bookstore or online at Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

That'll get you started...
