Q: Mixing more saline with albuterol for a Nebulizer treatment

If you mix more than the suggested amount of saline to your albuterol  for the nebulizer treatment(pre-measured or not) wiill that dilute the medicine? I say yes and so does my daughters pediatric nurse. My friend says that it will give her so a longer nebulizer treatment and it helps. What do you think?

There's a formula somewhere that would answer your question, and I'll see if I can find it.  I would guess if you added more than the recommended 3cc of normal saline the medicine would become diluted at some point.  Although I can tell you from personal experience if you add just 1-2 extra ccs of fluid the medicine still works.  So I'm not sure how much more fluid you'd have to add before the medicine no longer had any effect.  You'd really have to flood the cup.  Regardless, extra fluid would make for a longer treatment than necessary.
