Monica, if your son can't sleep because of coughing or other asthma symptoms, it means his asthma is not controlled. You need to take him to your physician and inform the doctor that he's having trouble sleeping because of his asthma and you think his treatment should be adjusted.
If he has allergies, your doctor may agree that an antihistamine is warranted (I take one as part of my daily asthma prevention medication regime), but if he's having trouble sleeping, it really is necessary for you to speak to his doctor.
Another good idea would be to ask for allergy tests so you can help identify his triggers.
Good luck!
