Q: How do I know for sure my 8 year old has asthma? Doctors seem to disagree with each other.

He was born with pnemonia, spent 3 days on a ventilator. Had RSV as an infant. He has fought chronic sinus infections, bronchitis, and pnemonia. One asthma doctor had him on: singulair, pulmicort flexhaler, prevacid, rhinocort, zytec, along with the albuteral inhaler.  He was given a nebulizer at age 2 and was taking xeponex and pulimort with it.  He keeps going thru rounds of bad sinus infections that lead to the respiratory infections. We just had a breathing test done that shows he results were above a normal person without asthma?   The peds and asthma doctor have told us they here wheezing when he is sick so they give him prenisone on top of everything else. This last go round he was on antibiotics from August thru the end of November when they ended up giving him 10 days of Avalox.

Hello... Diagnosing any condition is not an exact science, but diagnosing asthma in kids is especially challenging. Doctors look at the child's medical history, their family history, symptoms and sometimes testing to try to figure out what is going on in the airways.

With your son's history, asthma does seem likely. It is commonly linked to viral respiratory infections in infancy.

One thing I want to emphasize... as the parent, you always have the right to ask questions of the doctors and to get answers you are satisfied with. If you don't feel as though you are getting straight answers from your son's physicians, then tell them that. Ask them to talk with each other if they're giving you conflicting information.

You may also want to consider getting a second opinion from another specialist. Pulmonologists and allergists or immunologists are the common asthma specialists. You may even be able to find a pediatric subspecialist within those specialties.

Good luck!

Kathi
