Saturday, February 28, 2009 Bev asks

Q: Can Advair have a side effect of making my him and leg muscles ache when I lay on my side?

I have used Advair for several years as a preventative for bouts of seasonal bronchial asthma.  Recently, however, I've noticed  that when  I use Advair, I'll wake up during the night with my hip and leg muscles aching (I lay on me sides).  Then, when I get off my sides, the aching subsides.  Weird, I know.  I take Singular tablet daily for the asthma and use Maxair only when needed for immediate relief.  I am a 66 year old female.

Hi Bev,

Sorry to hear you're having such difficulties! I suspect, though, that your aching has more to do with circulatory or some other muscle/joint issue than Advair. Still, the only way to be sure is to make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out. It could also be that your mattress is no longer providing the support you need.

I just wouldn't assume it is the Advair!

Good luck,

Kathi

I have to say, that since my son has been on Advair he complains of joint and muscle pain a lot.  It's interesting and good to know what others feel while on the same medications.  I would not rule it out.  Especially if you notice it only when you take your Advair.

I just realized that you say "when" you take it.  Are you not taking it each and every day?

Just wanted to make sure you are not taking it when you are already in the middle of an asthma attack, or short of breath.  It is not a rescue inhaler, it's used to prevent attacks.  It's a little late to use it when you are already short of breath, or wheezing or whatnot.  Make sure you are using it properly, so will be healthy.

I had been on Advair for several years and recently started having real bad neck and shoulder pain. The pain would even be in my arms sometimes to.  I looked it up online and it does say that bone and muscle pain could be a side effect of Advair.

I talked to my doctor about it and she prescribed me Symbicort to try.
