Q: When do I take my 7yr old to the doctor when the albuterol treatments dont stop coughs?

I was told to give my 7yr old son an albuterol treatment whenever he has a cough.  This cold weather is his main trigger for his asthma.  The treatment helps but he still has the cough.  It is bad enough that it makes him wet the bed at night from coughing so much.  Is it now time to take him to the doctor so it can be treated differently?

Dear Valerie:

First and foremost, if you are uncomfortable with how your child is responding to medication or if you are at all concerned about his health, PLEASE contact his doctor.

Once you visit the doctor, ask for a written asthma plan to help guide you through when to give him which medications, how much to give him and when you should treat his symptoms more aggresively.

Any night awakening episodes are definitely indications to seek additional guidance from the doctor.

Good luck in your quest to help your son breathe easier!

My daughter also has Asthma since she was little. She is now 15.Her doctor recomended we use a cool mist humidifier in her room to keep the air moist.this seems to help her cough.Because the air circulates the cool air around and doesn't dry out their throat.
