Hi Kathleen,
Not being a doctor, and no knowing enough about your child and the level of asthma he or she suffers with, so it's difficult for us to make a recommendation. What I can do is give you some links to information here that you can use to speak to your doctor. Then you and the doctor can make the best decision for your child.
Health Central is a great resource for information that will help you ask all the right questions, however it can not take the place of your doctor's sound medical advice. So here are some places to start.
First of all, there is a wonderful overview just about child asthma here. This includes symptoms, quick relief medications, long relief medications, and current treatment protocols.
Dr Fred Little also has a share post that gives great tips on what to ask when you see the doctor. You can read that posting here. Sloane Miller was an asthmatic child and is a "been there done that mom" to children who are also allergic and asthmatic. I highly recommend reading her shareposts located here.
I hope this helps. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your child are doing!
Vicki M
