Your son's doctor is the best judge of what is the right medication mix for him, based on his physical examination of your son and your observation of symptoms, etc. Experts do recommend an inhaled steroid as the best treatment for asthma.
Not treating asthma actually carries many more serious effects than the almost always very mild and usually short-lasting side effects from an inhaled steroid.
If you're not sure your son is on the right path, has he been evaluated by an asthma specialist (allergist, immunologist, or pulmologist)? If not, that kind of consult could help set your mind at ease.
Best,
Kathi
