Q: Four year old with asthma still taking deep breaths.

My 4 year old has asthma and has allergies. She takes Singulair, Flovent and Albuterol. She still takes deep breaths and says she can't get air sometimes.  We purchased a Pulse Oximeter and the times she "can't get air" her oxygen is 95-98%.  She currently only sees a pediatrician, should she see a specialist?  It seems as if her asthma is not under control when she feels like this.

Thank you.

Based on the picture you paint here it would seem wise to at the very least call your child's physician and explain your concerns.  There are so many good medicines today for asthma no child should have to suffer.  If your physician is unable to manage your child's asthma, a specialist may be indicated.

Of course I say this not knowing the history of your child's asthma.  I have a few questions for you:  How long has your child had asthma?  Has she spent time in the ER?  Is this symptom new or ongoing?

Also, How long has your child been on these medicines?  Many experts say it takes up to two weeks for meds like Singulair and Flovent to start working.

Hi Jolene,

Treating asthma in young children can be a tricky business. Besides calling your regular pediatrician, as Rich says, you might also consider getting a consult with an allergist. This is a doctor who specializes in the care of people (especially kids) with asthma and allergies. That is probably the best way to get an Asthma Action Plan that is the absolute best approach for your child.

And good for you for taking your daughter's symptoms seriously!

Good luck,

Kathi
