Q: Childhood asthma and Humidity

My 9 year old son has asthma. On days that it is humid, he has a very hard time cooling off. He quickly becomes red in the face and sweats a great deal, much more than other children. Is this caused by his asthma? Does this mean his asthma is not under control? I am concerned because it deters him from playing like the other children.

It appears you are a very observant mom for picking up on the symptoms you describe. Your child is very fortunate.

If your child is miserable enough not to want to play with other kids, that's definitely something to take note of.  Whether this is caused by asthma or not, it is something you should talk about with his pediatrician.

That said, it is a fact that humidity makes the air thicker and this can make it harder to breath for some asthmatics. And the symptoms you describe may be signs of asthma (I list the signs here).

If you and your doctor determine these symptoms are caused by asthma as you suspect, there are some great medicines your doctor may prescribe to prevent your child from having asthma symptoms.

Likewise, you can also work with your child and physician on generating an asthma action plan, as the one discussed in the link above and here.

I hope this answers your question.  Please let us know what you decide to do and how things turn out.  Any further questions please ask.
