Hi Julia,

My first reaction to your question was "I don't think so," but being an avid researcher, I went to the Web to learn more before answering you. And I was surprised what I found out. My instincts weren't completely wrong. The pre-release testing of Advair did not reveal weight gain as a side effect. And it doesn't appear as a side effect in the official Advair information. However, edema and swelling do, and those are conditions that can contribute to weight gain.

But, there looks to be tons of what is called anecdotal evidence about Advair and weight gain. Anecdotal means, basically, stories. In other words, lots of people who have taken Advair have reported otherwise unexplained weight gain. I read many accounts of people gaining 10 to 20 pounds while on Advair. But there have not been any studies that have scientifically proven it to be true. Still, another page here on MyAsthmaCentral.com does report weight gain as an occasional side effect.

My advice? If you're concerned about your weight, contact your doctor right away to discuss alternative options for asthma treatment. Meanwhile, make as many healthy choices as you can to control your weight, such as:

-- eating small, healthy meals low in fat and sugar

-- exercising 30 minutes a day at least 6 days a week

-- avoiding alcohol

To your health,

Kathi

Hi,

You mention that if one has experienced weight gain from Advair, to consult our healthcare provider to consider another medication.  What medication can Asthmetics take without the steroids?

Thanks.

Concerned that the Advair 500/50 being a steroid might be causing me to gain weight since I have not changed my eating habits?

After one year of daily Veramyst and Advair (recently changed to HFA), I have seen a steady 12 lb. weight gain. I would attribute this to middle age, but have been on a crazy exercise schedule since January (crazy= 1 hour on treadclimber/ elliptical/ treadmill then resistance training and even 4 months with a befuddled Personal Trainer. Also did Weight Watchers for three weeks and gained 2 1/2 lbs.....). Having cut calories, carbs, processed foods, I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I guess the next step is gluten free, dairy free, everything free. (And, yes, I did get my thyroid tested.)

Has anyone else had similar experiences? Thanks.

I've been similarly packing on the pounds after taking only Veramyst...I think it's that in combination with my birth control pill--been doing 50-70 minutes of cardio at a time...driving me crazy. I have to stop the nose spray, though I do love being able to breathe! Tough call.

Kate,

Thanks for sharing your similar experience with Veramyst. After upping intensive interval cardio to 75 minutes 5x/week and weight training 3x/week, I am ready to throw in the

towel (literally). I'm going to try a non-steroid asthma Rx in September and will let you know if that helps the weight, assuming of course I am still breathing.

Hope you are well and thanks again for commiserating with me.

So, I am NOT crazy.  On Advair daily since 2007, having always been considered thin, I gained 15 - 20 pounds in the last two years.  I also developed aching edema problems in my calves.  No diet changes, and have been increasing exercise to 6 days weekly (40 minutes or more daily) for over five months.  No change in weight.  I told several doctors, who all brush it off, considering me within "normal" range (but I am not, for me), or suggest they are pre-menopausal symptoms.  I had this problem with another medication over the years, not many believing me on that one either.  Thank goodness for the chance to find out this really is happening to others.  Add to that, intermittent breast tenderrness/pain that I mentioned to physicians several times.  Allegedly, on the radio just yesterday was a report of this side effect with Advair as well.

Thanks for your email on Advair and weight gain. Since I posted that comment, the Black box warning label now includes "persisitent weight gain" and my MD has concurred with that fact. But my personal side effect list has gotten even longer: after being told to exercise more and eat less, I went on an even more intense program of weight training and spinning for two hours,4-5 times per week. Still no weight loss but slowly increasing blood pressure, arrythmia, PVCs, and palpitations. Went to a cardiologist who took me off Advair immediately as these are also side effects. (At least with the Advair, breathing was excellent.) Flovent is not as effective.

Hopefully, I will find a magic formula and share it with you. The bottom line is that all these drugs have side effects. If anyone has any advice on how to counter the weight gain, I would really appreciate it! Thanks.

Yes I have, I know that the medication has cause me to gain weight. what is so bad about this I cannot get rid of the weight I work out every day, plus I watch what I put in my mouth.  I am so unhappy but I am not sick.  I will continue to work out reason I feel better.  I am almost 200. pound 500 mg of advair but I can breath.

Theres, thank you for your reply and sharing your experiences with Advair. I wish that I had some helpful insight to share with you. I did try to go off Advair and tried Flovent + Singulair. That experiment lasted two weeks and then it was back to good old (but effective) Advair.

But let's keep looking for a better answer. Maybe someone reading this blog can give us some helpful advice. Until then, I will keep on exercising, continue to eat few calories and no carbs and looking for a better way!

As far as whether Advair can cause weight gain or not the standard medical answer is "no". I am a 50+ male triathlete and runner. I have been on inhaled steroids with intermittant predisone use (less in my 30's and 40's more in the last couple of years) for over 20 years.

While competing at Ironman triathlons and achieving a national ranking I had unexplained weight gain. I went to weight watchers, they were dismayed. I was off their charts when it came to activity versus calories.

I researched what could be causing the weight gain. At that time their were 200 different internet blurbs on weight gain and advair. Now there are over 700,00.

The pharmacutical co that makes advair   have since added in their warnings:

1. A black box warning, gee why wasnt this done in the beginning?

2. Listed weight gain as a side effect and advised you to go back to your doctor, who by the way wont believe you and does not know the warning is there.

3. Listed certain hormonal gland suppressions as a warning in the fine print. Again, good luck getting a Dr to believe you on that one.

I was told to look for a endrochonoligist that does research. I will settle for one that believes me and believes the warnings on the label.

I have no idea if it is the cortocosteriod or whatever or what the cause is but 704,000 people can not be making up their weight gain. It is not an increase in appetite. I have run over 20,000 and bicycled the same distance. If I am not skinny something is just plain wrong.

704,000 can not be wrong

Keith,

Thank you so much for your reply on the "weight gain and Advair use". I have really felt like I was losing my mind (while gaining weight). After visiting three MDs and, as I insisted something just wasn't right, I was given a script for anti-depressants. So I upped the cardio, got a cruel personal trainer, ate even less and now weigh even more. I am going to try a non-steroid asthma Rx in Sept. and will let you know if 1. it works and 2. if there is any ability to lose any of the weight I have gained.

Again, many thanks for sharing your research.

I sat down just now to look for coupons for my Advair which is expensive for this retired 75 year old woman.  Then I saw the pieces on weight gain and just about fell off of my chair.  This last winter I went far over anything I've ever weighed, and this was my first season of Advair.  Now I don't feel so guilty that I "just let myself go."  I'm not alone.

I am in Weight Watchers now and have increased my daily activity and so far have lost fourteen pounds....but I SO APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S COMMENTS.  MANY THANKS.  Barbara

I started off at 210 lbs and began taking 250/100 Advair diskus.  I had been and still train extensively in brazilian jiu-jitsu.  I weigh 235 lbs now.   The teacher said I am the only person he has ever met who trains jiu-jitsu and gained weight.  I am a firm believer that my weight gain is directly related to Advair.   I am also an avid runner/ sprinter/ weight lifter and muay thai kickboxer.  I have trained even harder since the weight gain and can not lose it.

thanks,
Mark L

My six year old daughter has been on Advair 3 months (also started singulair around the same time, and been on Veramyst and Patanase for 2 months).  She has gained 12 pounds in the last 3 months.  Do you think it is the Advair that is causing the weight gain ( I originally thought it was the Singulair)?  What is the name of the non steroid Rx you will be taking?

Hi everyone that is on the Advair Diskus, My daughter started taking the Advair diskus when she was around 8 years old.... She was not big at all, over time she started gaining weight  she was up to 150 pounds at the age of 12 years old and I ask the doctor if it was the advair and he said "NO"!!!! I didn't know but my daughter stop taking the advair when she was 14 and now she is 15 years old and she is 127 lbs. so if advair does not make you gain weight then explain why my daughter went from 150 plus on the advair to 127 lbs. when she stop taking it.... Just to let everyone know my daughter was only taking advair diskus 100/50 and NO other medicationsSmile

yes it does.  and thankfully i found an amazing dr.  he told me that advair goes into your blood stream systemically, and causes the weight and the swelling.  i was on it for years- and the advair and singular and my doctor made me throw it all out. he said it was as if i was taking prenisone for years.

he now put me on ALVESCO (to replace advair) and xopenex (like proair/albuterol w/out the jumpiness).

Alvesco changed my life.  He said the advair takes about 2.5 weeks to leave the body until i will notice and he said my workouts are about to get insane since the alvesco will be hitting all my little bronciols, and not just the large ones.  hope this helps guys.  i seriously chalked up my 10lbs to getting older,... but that isn't right.
