Q: Strange symptoms- asthma related?

I am 23 years old and was first told i had asthma at around the age of 7. My condition as always been well controlled and even seemed to... disappear(?) between the ages of 12- 16. I now take regular inhailers with no problems as such. My peak flow is always consistantly high etc.

But i notice that sometimes I get this strange.. sort of itching/burning/congested feeling in my chest which can last for a few hours or even days. My peak flow rarely changes, my inhailor doesn't help or get rid of the feeling, and it's not that I can't breath, per say, it's just an uncomfortable feeling and I seem to get breathless a bit more easily...

Do  you think it's linked to my asthma? My doctor said that it sounds more like an allergic reaction, but i have no idea what i could be allergic too!?!

Hello H,

Sounds like you have your own medical mystery! Where's Dr. House when we need him? Wink

Seriously, though, I can't diagnose you as a nurse and over the Internet, but the itching etc. sounds like allergy symptoms, as your doctor has theorized. But with allergic asthma, I would expect that you'd also be noting asthma symptoms, which you say you are not.

One thing I'm wondering, and this is purely conjecture, is if the symptoms you're noticing might be at all related to gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GERD for short. I suggest this because GERD is very closely associated with asthma and the hot feeling you mention makes me think of the feeling of heartburn. But to be sure, you'd need to be examined for that.

It might be worth asking about, anyway. And if your family doctor doesn't seem receptive, you might ask for a consult with an allergist.

To your health,

Kathi
