Some doctors have blamed Serevent (salmeterol, also found in Advair) for up to 4,000 asthma-related deaths per year. Though salmeterol is designed to keep life-threatening asthma attacks at bay, studies have found that salmeterol can actually cause such attacks in some patients. GlaxoSmithKline has recently revised product labeling to reflect some risks, but finds the data on asthma-related deaths "inconclusive."
