Asthma is often misdiagnosed: study

A new study suggests that as many as one third of people diagnosed with asthma may not actually have the disease. Canadian researchers studied 540 patients who had been told they were asthmatic and who had been given medication. Further testing showed that the diagnosis was wrong in more than 30 percent of them, particularly if the patient was overweight. Experts say this misdiagnosis is no surprise, since shortness of breath, wheezing, and similar symptoms are often immediately diagnosed as asthma, though they can also be signs of congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and respiratory infections.
