Poverty may worsen asthma

Being poor may alter the genes that cause asthma, a new study has found. Researchers studied immune system cells in 31 children who had asthma. Half of those children came from poor families, while the other half came from families that did not have financial trouble. Scientists found that the kids who came from poor families had more severe asthma, and they also had more activity in genes that were responsible for inflammation, stress response, and wound healing. Experts say this study suggests that economic and other social factors can actively affect health on a genetic level.
