Apple-shaped women suffer more from asthma

Women who have a waist circumference of 35 inches or more are more likely to develop asthma--even if their weight is normal, researchers say. Data collected on 88,034 school teachers and administrators found that women who were overweight or obese were two to three times more likely to develop asthma in general. But even women who were a normal weight were one third more likely to develop the respiratory problem if they were "apple shaped"--meaning they gained weight mostly in the belly. Experts say that's because belly fat can cause inflammation, which may worsen asthma.
