Sue...I know several people that have gone thru the SSDI process, and it can be excruciating and stressful unless you know what to expect. Thanks for sharing these important tips.
Most people can expect to be denied initially, in spite of those dang lengthy government forms you need to fill out. I've never known anyone with bipolar that has been approved first try. Sure there are some folks that have been.
When you get your first rejection letter, then you get legal representation. Lawyers as a general rule do not charge unless you win. When you do win, they will take their usual percentage.
My best advice is to document EVERYTHING very thoroughly. Document your work history. Document jobs you've been fired from or quit because of your illness. Document your health history: number of hospitalizations, doctors you've seen, meds you take. Document your daily routine with limitations. Document what it's like to be bipolar when well, when depressed, when manic. Document, document, document. I think you get my drift. It's so important.
And be patient. It's not uncommon to wait up to 6 months to get a determination. But if you deserve disability, you will likely get it in spite of that first rejection.

I am in a position right now where I am trying to figure out how to deal with this situation. My family has been through hell these past few years financially and this has all taken quite a toll on me. My husband had lost his job unexpectedly as it went overseas, and he went to school for phlebotomy but does not make even half as much as he used to. We filed bankruptcy and then lost our home to foreclosure.
I have bi-polar, anxiety, depression and 5 herniated discs in my low back. I have been terminated from my job in medical billing (which is stressful enough & I can no longer do) due to issues brought on by my disorder and I am also in early peri-menopause along with side effects from the medication I take.
The biggest financial problem is that there is no way we can live on the $940.00 I would be allowed to earn monthly while applying for SSDI. This process can take a very long time, what are we supposed to do in the meantime?

it has destroyed my life. I have already lost 20+ professional

I think I have suffered enough with my Bipolar Manic\Depression,
I paid into the FICA system 25+ years and SSDI says they over paid me. I have submitted 3 requests for SSDI waiver and have not heard anything on the third request. I am just asking for a break, I am trying to become an independent taxpayer again and have been under the care of a psychiatrist, therapist, powerful psychiatric medicine.
Please help me get this alleged overpayment waived, I cannot afford a lawyer, no Illinois lawyers even take SSDI alleged overpayment letter cases and nobody in the Illinois SSDI office Aurora, IL can help me. The office information SSDI Admin Office 1325 N Lake St, Aurora, IL (630) 264-2683, they never answer the phone either.
The government can find 700 Billion Dollars to bailout poorly managed businesses and I can barely buy toothpaste.
Please help me get this alleged overpayment waived.
