I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with Bipolar Disorder. I was put on a mix of seroquel, effexor and wellbutrin. I took this for a year and eventually took myself off of it because of side effects. I then tried to go the natural route which did not work. I began to experience depression episodes t...

don't give up just yet!  you'll find the right combo of meds if not allready!  trazadone is a good med to  be on.  i have taken it before.  it works! so keep on trying and you'll get there!  it takes some time.

Thanks Sherri. I just feel like throwing in the towel but know that is not the solution.

All 3 take time to kick in, especially Lamictal.  With Lamictal the "low and slow" definately is the way to go due to the potential of some really nasty side effects.

I had to stop Seroquel after a month on it due to some nasty adverse effects.  Doc took me off that.  In addition, didn't enjoy the 15 pound weight gain in 1 month.

Meds are different for each person.  I know it's tiring to read and hear but, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.  Similarily, what Bipolar does to one doesn't necessarily do to another.

It will take some time to find the right med and/or right med combo.  The thing is, and you should give yourself some much do credit for, you are still trying.  Even if the natural stuff didn't work, you were still trying.  As long as you try, and keep taking steps, eventually you will find the medical help your illness needs.

Don't throw the towel in hon.. be easy on yourself, don't rush it, and work with your psychiatrist and your therapist (if you have one) closely.

I take lamictal and welburtion along three other drugs and find that they make a nice combo. The welbutrion tends to lift me up in the morning without lifting me to high i currently take 300mg. The lamictal seems to keep me stable, it is one of the best mood stablizers I have been on. Currently taking 600mg of that. The nice thing about welburtion is it is less apt to cause a manic episode like other antidepressents. Hang on to that towel for a little while longer. If you want more info on the Trazadone check out http://www.crazymeds.us/   Good luck.

Lamictal worked much better for my son than the Seroquel.  It took about 2 months for us to really see an improvement.  The only bad side effect from that one is "the rash".  If you start getting itchy, you need to stop it immediately and call your doctor.

I took Wellbutrin a few years ago to stop smoking and got a little crazed on it.  I started having anger outbursts that just weren't like me at all.  Some people do well on it though.

My son's current doctor weened him off Seroquel and put him on a mixture of Lamictal 100 mg and Celexa 20 mg.  That worked for him for about 6 months then he was a little "too up".  Now he just takes Lamictal 200 mg and Remeron 15 mg for sleep.  His mood is very balanced right now.  No extreme ups or downs.

Don't give up hun.  Maybe you'll be one who responds very positively to the Lamictal.  It's the best thing that ever happened to us.

Be sure and keep your follow up appointments and call the doctor regarding how you're feeling if you don't feel "quite right".  Sometimes they can do minor tweaking that makes a big difference.  We had to call quite often in the first 3 months of treatment for minor adjustments.  Staying on top if it is the best way to get stable.

Darn.  You need to stop taking it now.  The rash can be very bad.  Call your doctor first thing this morning.

If you'll pardon my asking, you will be calling your doctor to report how the meds are working?  Maybe your doc will make a change, or prescribe a faster-acting, short-term med to help out until the other meds have time to kick in.

If you do some reading on wellbutrin, bipolar people aren't supposed to get this drug. Trazodone is good for me because it puts me on a schedule and I sleep well with it. Important for those of us with manic episodes. I take lamictal as well and haven't had any side effects from it. The reaction you are having is probably due to the wellbutrin, but talk to your psych dr about it before stopping any medication. Good luck Sue
