Breaking Down Bipolar

By John McManamy, Health Guide Tuesday, July 17, 2007
In response to one of my blogs, Louise posted: "Physicians - mostly trained as biologists - need to go back to their roots. Taxonomy is very specific. Diseases are not." Louise, Louise, Louise. "Bipolar disorder is not a taxonomically consistent ‘thing,'" ...

Well, I have always thought my manias and hypomanias were my thinking in "overdrive"; now it's confirmed.  But John!  How nice of you to graph it for us.  -Angie

Hi, Angie. Yes, it's now a confirmed scientific fact, according to two graphs I made up as I went along. Big Smile But seriously, you nailed it. I think we all knew this intuitively, that we really are rational. Yes, our manias get us into trouble and are no laughing matter, but rational is our true baseline.
I suspect what holds most of us back are our various personality issues and underlying anxiety. And of course the depressions. Oh, the depressions. Unless all these are addressed together, a lot of us will remain stuck.
I plan to keep "gridding away."

So many groups or boards you can discuss have people who understand nothing about bipolar and are afraid to delve into it. They feel they must take their meds and just say they are "acting out" or "being manic" but never want to go into that greay area of "What really IS Bipolar? I got diagnosed and even though I believe it it, I dont believe its cut and dry "Bipolar" either.

I think many who really are not Bipolar but may have some mental imbalance are toss into this category..Well, that got me tossed into the pits of "How dare you say any such thing without scientific evidence on your part!!"  I thought this was an opinion and venting board..not a scientific journal?? Anyway I got told shut up and go away. And then everyone went on about how their meds didnt work this time again or they were angry at family members but it was all the fault of their illness Bipolar and they had no control over it....I mentioned diet and environmental possibilities and further to go away and quit "quit acting like a nut!" Hummm....Im a nut, being told not to discuss issues with....??
