My Life as a Red Sox Fan - Part I

By John McManamy, Health Guide Thursday, September 06, 2007
I grew up in a town in central Connecticut, about half-way between New York and Boston. This was the fifties and sixties. The New York Yankees had Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in the outfield, with Whitey Ford on the mound and Yogi Berra catching. Do you detect a mismatch? The Boston Red Sox ha...

Hi John,

I wanted to tell you a little anecdote.

I often ride a bike in the morning for exercise.

My only conflict with cars has been with contractors in pick-up trucks in a hurry going to a work site. They rarely want to slow down for a bicyclist.

The October that the Red Sox won the Series I decided to wear a Red Sox ball cap

not knowing that this would have any effect on guys going to work.

Well, it did,  I sailed through all the intersections with guys waving and saluting.

it was as if the Red Seas parted.

Hey, Margaret. You're right. The Red Sea parted, the sun stopped in the sky, a rainbow appeared in the heavens, a bright star shone overhead, swords were turned into plowhares, and the lion lay down with the lamb.
Who coulda thunk it?
Stay tuned ...

I have lived my entire life in Massachusetts in a very loyal, almost religious type Red Sox family. It got to the point where I just assumed they were going to lose again like they always did. I love those Sox, but boy they did a number on us each and every year. I hate to admit this but I got to the point where I just waited for that last loss so the season would be over. When they won the series it sounded like the Mardi Gras hit my neighborhood. Talk about a celebration! Sure would love to see that again!

Hey, Mary Lou. I'm gonna work my way toward that 2004 season. But you know all the stuff that has to come first. The first thing I thought of when they won it all was my father. He didn't live to see it happen. I know a lot of people in New England felt the way I did. It wasn't just about baseball. It was all about family.

I also grew up in Central Connecticut in a neighborhood that literally half the kids were Red Sox fans and half the kids were Yankee fans. We had to listen to the Yankee fans year after year after year. 1978 was just the worst ever. *#&*$ Bucky Dent! I married someone who grew up in a family that were rabid Red Sox fans and he actually switched to liking the Yankees after that year. I have since brought him back from the Dark Side. My favorite picture of him is when we went to the parade in Boston and I made him wear a championship T-shirt and hold a poster proclaiming the Sox as world champions. If he had not come back to the light, that would have been in the collage of pictures at his wake - it still will be.

Hey, Kathy. Rolling on the floor laughing. In a future blog I will be writing about how I, personally, am responsible for breaking the Curse of the Bambino. Keep posting here and stay tuned ...
