Giving Up TV and Radio - Question of the Week

By John McManamy, Health Guide Saturday, May 21, 2011
It's been about a year since I moved into my new place. I have no TV and do not miss it. Likewise, I do not have a radio. Yes, last night I did view some old George Carlin clips via YouTube on my desktop. Yes, I do listen to streamed music via Pandora. But this is hardly the same as mindlessly having...
Treating Mania

Twice in the last 2 yrs I have gone for 3 months w/o television.  I tried it a third time but had a lot of anxiety and find that I use tv to calm me sometimes, to take my mind off my troubles.  So I reinstated it after 2 weeks off.  I went w/o because I felt the need to break my "addiction" to it.  I wanted time to devote to a bunch of books that have been sitting there for a long time, waiting to be read.  But now with my tv back on, I find I am still taking time to read and write a lot.  And now that most of the regular season of my fave shows has ended, I will probably even devote more time to other pursuits.  I do listen to the radio every morning while I shower and do my makeup and hair and straighten my apartment.  But it is pleasant for me and I enjoy a variety of stations.  I do listen to Pandora on occasion.

My home has been TV free since my children moved out 10 years agao.  What's tht in weeks?  520.  I am an night auditor and my boss allows us to watch TV  so that we can stay awake. There are several desk clerks that don't own nor watch a tv at home and bring their Kindle's to work to pass the time when it is not busy.    I made my night audit tv free just this week.  It was giving me anxiety in the wee hours of the shift (around 5am) and I didn't need it with guests just beginning to check out.  I do watch Netflix and old Brit and Canadian TV shows on that but I can measure my dosage of anxiety producing material much better.  I graduated with a BA in literature and am reading Octopus on the audit.  (I know, if any writer can put me to sleep it is Norris) Have fun with your experiment.

I, too, don't watch TV...only an occasional DVD movie. I listen to the radio sparingly. Usually it's either a christian station or classical music. I agree...I need the solitude to actually hear myself think. It really is a distraction to this hypersensitive brain. Much like being in a room full of people...I have to really focus on what the person that I'm talking to is saying. When the TV is on, it adds another layer to the already full of sounds atmosphere. It's very taxing and takes so much energy.

I used to ask my kids, who seem to be constantly 'wired'..."how can you hear the still small voice of God, if you are constantly bombarded with sound?"

I love to hear the wind, birds, toads, God's voice, angel wings...

How can a person learn meditation if they can't quiet their mind enough to sit with the silence...
