Planning For Disruptions in Routines - Question of the Week

  • Bipolar and managing routines. I’m in exactly the same spot I was in a week ago last Sunday morning, semi-brain dead, in front of my desktop, Irish tea at my side, looking to slowly boot up and ease into my day. Then I discovered I was due to fly out the next morning, first for a quick family visit back east, then a bipolar conference in Pittsburgh.

    Crap! I thought I was flying out Wednesday or Thursday. This meant I had one day to do three days work, plus preparing for my trip. Miraculously, I managed to get myself out the door 7:30 the next morning.

    So here I am, one week later. I got in the door early evening last night, slept the sleep of the dead, and woke up in a state of nagging Zombieness with a sore throat. Clearly, my brain and my body are telling me something. Typically, it takes me days to recover from road trips, which is one reason over the years I have severely cut down. Years ago, four trips was about my average. Then one year I did something like ten. Then I got smart and did only one the next year. One is now my average. I’m staying put for the rest of the year.

    Bipolar and the life of a road warrior is not a good match. We are easily overstimulated and overwhelmed. We are hypersensitive to stress. Strange situations and strange people can prove extreme challenges. Plus our already unstable circadian rhythms get further destabilized. On top of that, we have to contend with the rapid readjustment to life back home.

    I could ask how you deal with the challenges of road trips, but let’s make it more general. Question:
