Topomax with an SSRI

By latj Tuesday, September 30, 2008

My Pdoc last year put me on Topomax (100 mg) and Prozac (20 mg) once a day.  At first I had a lot of concentration problems which is bad because I am working on my PH D.  It took me about 5 months to get through that but it has passed.  I have very prolific and real dreams that almost seem as if I am awake and they are scary.  I sometimes have tremors in my muscles but this is "said to be normal".  I was just wondering if anyone else had any side effects from this combination. I know this combination is not yet FDA approved but Pdocs are using it.  It is working for me by controlling my BP very effectively.  I was just wondering if anyone else was on this combination and if anyone else was having any side effects.

Please, just listen to yourself.... you would never put a loved one through these kinds of side effects, would you?   This is not normal!  You are seeking health, to become normal, and so you take this drug that your doctor prescribed, which isn't even FDA approved, and now you have all these symptoms for which no one should "settle".

Gosh, even if something is FDA approved, do you know that 100,000 people die each year, taking their medications as prescribed.. .. certainly not accounting for who knows how many hundreds of thousands more die who take their medication incorrectly.

You need to find a good environmental doctor of integrative medicine who will do a full scan of biological testing to find out why you have bp.    Just one example of a cause of mood disorder that mainstream doctors ignore... many people with mood disorders have high toxicity of one or more heavy metals in their system (mercury (from silver-mercury amalgams, fish), lead from water and many other sources, cadmium, nickel, aluminum. Combinations of these metals can cause strange symptoms.  The liver cannot detoxify the high load of toxins ever present in our environment today, and now you are adding these man-made pharmaceuticals that the liver doesn't even know what to do with, because they are not natural to the human body.

Please seek a physician who truly cares about you enough to find out what is causing the mood disorder in your body and brain, because adding to your toxic load isn't going to solve anything, only hurt you.

Very interesting.  I actually have gone the "holistic" route.  And I use "Chinese Medicine" with my Pdoc.  I take accupuncuture and use detoxifying teas and herbs along with my meds.  I have had this problem since I was 13.  I have gone completely off all meds and tried the completely "holistic" route and it was not the "complete" answer.  The lack of concentration has passed and my brain is now functioning normal.  I am back working on my PH D and very glad.  The tremors are a side effect of the Topomax but as I found out from my Dr I am also on the Topomax because I suffer from epilepsy but have not have a seizure in years due to the fact that I have been on anti-seizure medication and the med also helps control my migranes.  I have been on just about every medication there is for BP and the Dr has given me a safe and non-addictive sleeping med that has helped with the nightmares.

BP is a lifelong disease and finding the best way to cope with it so we are able to live the best life possible is what most of us are looking for.  I've had all the metals tests done and I'm on vitamins and herbs to protect my system.  I am also a 3x Cancer survivor with an Immune Difficiency Disorder because of taking radiation and chemo 3 times.

I think you post was very good.  There are so many people who have not even given the "holistic" route a try.  I think it can be very helpful and should be a part of everyone's routine.  Thank you for your comment.  Laughing

wow, if the previous poster didn't freak you out with FDA facts, I just would like to mention my friend was on topomax for epilepsy - a seizuer disorder.  So the topomax is likely to be causing the tremmors; it is a brain / brain chemistry altering drug. There isn't a great deal known or consistently proven about the brain as far as research and study has gone. Topomax is perscribed for things such as migranes, seizures, depression, and bi-polar. The effects are different for everyone and can lessen or worsen over time.

I would agree that tremors are not the kind of side effects you should be inflicted with.   Depending on how long you have been on the medication, and if they were a sudden onset or came gradually;  Talk To Your Doctor,  if nessicary seek a second opinion - espically if you feel your doctor is not listening to you.

Do not stop taking the medicine as perscribed; a medical professional with your medical and perscription history will be able to perscribe a lower dosage and gradually ease you off of the Topomax, usually onto a different drug.     If you suddenly stop taking this type of medication your symptoms and side effects could become severe.  Medications for depression, bi-polar, and chemical balance take time to work, and build up a suply in the body.  when the supply isn't stable the body gets withdrawl symptoms, just like with illegal narcotics, so be very careful what steps you take.

I hope you get something that works better for you.   I know Bipolar can be difficult to over come, and putting faith in things that seem to not help or be negitively affecting you brings on feelings of frustration, hopelessness, and more depresson;  but patience might be all you can try for.              Best wishes.                          ~Lissa

I also have been on other anti-seizure medications because one of my disabilites is seizure activities but I haven't had one in years.  I also have severe migranes.  It appears that the Topomax is working but like all meds, it has some bad side effects.  I am very happy in my life but the side effects can be very disrupting.  I've gotten past the memory lapses but I still from time to time have the tremors.  I've discussed it with my Dr and we have decided that all meds have side effects and after weighing carefully all options I have decided to give it another six months.  I've never been in a better place mentally in my life, not only because of the meds but because I have taken control of my mental health and life.  I am stronger and am more involved in my treatment than ever before.  I am functioning on a very high level and most people would never have any idea that I am BP.  I don't share it with many people because of the "stigma" that still exsists.  I pray that one day that a medication will be available that will not have the side effects that we must endure.  I think I've been on them all at least once and given them all a fair shot.  This by far is the best choice.  The dreams are bad, but I'd rather take a sleeping pill and forgo that rather than have mania.

Thank you for your concern and post.

Peace & Love  Cool

also:

when I was a kid I was on ADD meds which gave me night terrors and sleep walking nigh terrors.     Brain chemistry is incharge of many aspects of our lives and emotions and mental states.     Vivid night mares are unplesant, but can be over come.

I was in the same boat....but now that I've been on my meds for a while the side effects have subsided as my body has gotten adjusted to the meds. If it's working well for you stick with it....

I also take Topomax (50 mg), Lexapro (10 mg) and Welbutrin XR 150 for BPD and found that my levels of concentration where distorted and that I had tremors in my legs and hands. I've been on the same dosage for about 2 yrs now and my concentration still isn't the best, but I no longer have the tremors; but my levels of concentration where never great due to the BPD.  My psy doc has asked if I wanted to try anything different and I refuse because the Topomax works great! Before being prescribed the Topomax I was only taking the Lexapro and it worked on it's on for about 6 months, but I needed a mood stabilizer. If you don't like the effects of the Topomax, ask your doc about Clonodine. It is also used as a mood stabilizer in BPD patients.

Topamax has the well-known side effect of memory loss, difficulty in concentration & that feeling like the word is "on the tip of your tongue" but you just can't think of it.  It is called the "stupid" drug often as that is how people feel on it.  I'm glad your brain functioning has cleared up, especially as you need to be able to concentrate fully to finish your degree.  I would be concerned about the tremors, but if you truly cannot take any other meds, I guess you are stuck.--Suzy
