Hi everyone! I just saw a commercial about the medication Abilify for the treatment of bipolar disorder....what's the deal? Is it any good? I am thinking about changing meds and would appreciate some feed back. Thanks.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 07:19 AMHi KP my name is Gertrude (Kerrie) I'm in Australia and have the best medical team,I have been taking Abilify now for 10 months and it has worked wonders. As I have had Bipolar for 20 odd years I have tried many meds, but as I am able to work full time and raise my family of teens(scary) not once have I come across a better drug.I also take Zoloft and Lamotrigne and yes it all takes time to work but anything that is good takes some times up to 3months to work properly so your answer is yes it is a good drug but only if it works for you.

Friday, May 16, 2008 at 10:03 AMHi,
Don't know if abilify is a good drug to take or not & suppose for some it probably would help them. Hope that is the case for you if you start taking it. I can only share my experience with taking it myself. I was sick all the time when starting the new medication to the point of having to go off of it. I was having problems sleeping because after taking it I would be up all night sick. I couldn't keep any food down or other medications. If I took other meds with it..it was hard to keep those meds down because I would become sick within half hour of taking abilify. Also, started to have problems with my hands and ankles swelling. I'm also diabetic and it would cause my sugers to go up. I'm no longer taking it..I was evidently allergic to it.

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 10:33 PMI am currently taking lamictal (300 mg). I was just placed on Abilify along with the lamictal. I only took it for a few nights. I could not sleep, it made my anxiety attacks more frequent as one fear of mine is getting sick. The nausea was pretty bad when I woke up. I had to nibble on crackers all day to help with the nausea. There are people that it helps alot. I just don't think I can do it. I know I need help but am ready to give up the drugs. My Dr. says that we just don't have the right combination yet. This is so very hard. It's like a putting together a puzzle and you just can't find that last piece that was dropped and lost or you're sure it was left out of the box! Grrrr.... I do have support from my husband which is honestly the only reason I've not completely given up. I'm all up in that depression/anger stage right now. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings............... who will be the lucky one to tick me off.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 11:06 PMAbilify has done something wonderful for my 18 yr old daughter. She has been taking this medication for almost 2 years and she appears to be a much happier, stable personality. I say "appears to be" because you can never know for sure how someone else feels inside, but I can say with certainty that her mood swings have leveled out. No more spending days in bed with all the curtains closed, etc. She is outgoing and friendly now. Sure, she has tough days, but those are few and far between.
Good luck to you.
Maria

Every drug is touted as the wonder drug to cure all. My suggestion would be to sit down with your psychiatrist and bring up the question of trying the medication. I feel all commercials and advertisements pertaining to any medications unless they are over the counter should be banned from the public and seen only by medical professionals.
I have a neighbor that runs to her doctor every time she sees a new commercial on TV wanting to try it as a cure all and I know she is not unique and the drug companies know it. I wrote a book titled “There are no magic pills” just ones to get us stable enough to try and work on getting our lives back.
