I'm confused.. how did he go from being an honors student / star athlete to a special education student?

I can see the "struggling with life" if he has been diagnosed with Bipolar but I guess I am dim as to how one can instantaneously go from being an honors student / star athlete to a special needs & special ed student?

Even so, some "special needs and special ed students" really outshine and excel moreso than their so called "normal" counterparts.  Yet, I am just troubled and confused... did he suffer a traumatic head injury perhaps?

He developed the illness all of the sudden, mania for three weeks, psychotic and then hospitalized.... I dont understand why it was so unexpected and sudden. We are having an IEP next week to make accomodations to all of his classes, memory, concentration, anxiety and depression are things he is  struggling with...Its hard to see him regressed so fast...
