SIDE EFFECTS OF DEPAKINE AND SEROQUEL

By rapunzel Monday, December 03, 2007

i wonder, if any of you all that have taken depakine 500mg to 1000mg have had the side effect of skin ichiness, but when you take the mood stabilizer seroquel, you dont have this side effect....????As far as weight gain, when someone is new to a drug, i found at the begining of depakine and also seroquel there was some weight gain,,,but you have to mentally control your eating and choice of foods...of course when i was on some heavier drugs at the hospital, risperderol and zyprexia, you are an eating machine...all high calorie, and just starving...being busy and eating lots of fruits and vegetables and lots and lots of water...I just think of the poor liver with all these chemicals we have to take for our brain transmitters, we need to flush the liver and kidneys everyday with water, water... Another question i have...i read that you have forgetfulness, which drugs? and is this only for a short time while you are on the drug or what and how does this work medically???? These meds, and which ones, do they have the properties of retrograde amnesia,,...I thought i read this somewhere on a drug insert,...and yes i just dont get it about the brain transmitters and how the lack of them work, even if i read it again and again...why dont i get it...I have another question, Thru the years we were able to do all those things and we were so on it....what happened to our brain that we get nervous and anxious and cant function like we use to be able to....Did we overuse the flight or fight syndrome, the yin more so we asked for more serotonin or more dopamine and now there is no more....?????Why are we mentally more able to focus on meds????And why doesnt the herbal drugs work as efficiently as regular meds????Is it because there are not regulated and we dont know what dose we are getting? One time, (I suspect my brother and his wife are bp, and they refuse to believe it,)I gave them 5htp and watched them, because i took it before because i read it helped the nerves, and they were like two lambs sitting next to each other and not bouncing off each other.  It was so hilarious.  You know they didnt even see the difference but I did.  One time, I was on the phone with a pdoc about getting my daughter tested for ADHD and the pdoc got mad on the phone and told me to stop talking so he could answer at least one of my questions...???Isnt it a scream, funny that we know so much about the bp syndrome or whatever and symptoms that we can diagnose our friends, family and strangers.....ahhahah but do we dare tell them, no way, not...it just upsets them and makes us nuts..hahah so who cares as long as we can have fun and communicate...just dont go off and start thinking, pressured speech. flight of ideals,.....etc....smile

Yes the meds do these things. But how about a sunrise or a walk in a park. Relax and begin to take it easy and be thankful that you are even still alive to even see what is going on around you. Peace be still and be quiet inside.

Hi, When I was first diagnosed with bipolar the doctor had me on depakote and it made me shake so I changed doctors and this doctor started me on seroquil. AT first I gained some weight. After a while it was increased. Eventually I went back to one pill a day. He tried to take me off the seroquil and my body could not do it. He did try abilify that had some real bad side effects so I am taking seroquil and I am doing just fine. My weight has gone done in fact I have lost over 40 pounds. I have diabetes but it has not effected it. My last A1C was 5.8. I also take zoloft. Sometimes it is trial and error. Just hang in there. Think Positive DTSB

Hi, yes, i did had the shakes, my hand would do that once in awhile, also i had hot flashes, with seroquil, some weight gain at the beginning but watching my diet and exercising kept that in check, i think being on depekine alone is not enough, anxiety creeps in after awhile and some depression.  Overall, seroquil helps you get a good nights sleep without feeling drugged when you wake up in the morning.  I tried to keep off of seroquil and just alone on depekine, i am coming to the conclusion that you need both together and am not sure why...i guess one stabilizes the other...gee wish i wouldnt have to take neither, but an occasional glass of wine sure speeds me up, and makes me feel good, but know my limits, not supposed to drink alot.. never took zoloft...i guess i have found my mix thanks for the info linda
