My son is 8 years and has been hospitalized. He has no formal diagnosis of any direct mental disorder the doctors refuse to diagnose him he has 90% of all the symptoms of bipolar and even on Abilify but with out any diagnosis what do I have/need to do to get him the proper treatment and to get him diagnosed?

Hi, Heather. Here's hoping for your son. Early-onset bipolar is a controversial diagnosis, despite strong evidence that kids get the illness. Nevertheless, because symptoms overlap with other childhood illnesses and conditions - such as ADHD and conduct disorder - and because the child version of the illness often manifests differently than the adult version, extreme caution needs to be exercised before a diagnosis can be rendered.

On top of that, a lot of idiots in the antipsychiatry movement continue to mouth off how child bipolar is a fad diagnosis. This year, in the wake of the tragic death of a child over-medicated for bipolar, there has been a backlash against the diagnosis.

    Your suggested two next steps:

1 Purchase "The Bipolar Child" by Papolos and Papolos.

2 Visit the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation website at There you will find lots of support and info from parents in your situation.
