I wrote this on Veteran’s day, a day the US set aside to honor those who have served our country. I have not served in the armed forces, but my gratitude for those who have runs deep. Here in the US we have a crisis taking place with respect to our veterans. We are taking injured soldiers ...

    Hi G.J.,

Thank you for this information. It will be wonderful if the help can get out there to all the soldiers who need it. The general public doesn't realize what happens to these soldiers when they come home unless they are personally involved.

My daughter Natalie is in the Army National Guard and has been in Iraq since July. She has been a constant source of support to me since I was diagnosed with bipolar. I speak to her whenever I can through the internet and she is always willing to listen to me when I need it even though she is in the middle of a war. Natalie is a very strong person and I am extremely proud of her. There has always been a very special bond between us.

I am terrified however about how she will deal mentally when she returns home. I cannot imagine the horrible things she is seeing and experiencing. She already lost one friend over there. I never hear a complaint or troubled word from her. She is always telling me to not worry about her and she will be fine. How can I not worry? Whenever we talk she wants to know how I am doing but she never tells me what is going on with her. I know she is going to need help dealing with this experience when she gets home and I am hoping we will find the help in our area. These soldiers deserve the best help we can give them.

    Mary Lou,

As a parent I can't imagine the stress you must be feeling having a child in Iraq.  My heartfelt thanks to your daughter for her service, and my thoughts and prayers for her safe and healthy return.

    GJ,

Thank you for your kind words. We are keeping our fingers crossed that she will get her 2 week leave sometime during the week after Thanksgiving. I just need to hug her.
