Stories In The News

By G.J. Gregory Friday, November 30, 2007

Here in the US, or at least in my part of the US, we get very little CBC (Canadian) programming. I regularly listen to CBC’s radio show “As It Happens” on my local NPR affiliate, but that’s the extent of the programming we receive, at least to my knowledge. This week, on CBC’s News Documentary “The Lens” there is a show called Flight From Darkness. This week it’s about Percy Paul, an expert on String Theory. String Theory is fascinating, even for a scientific lay person like myself. Per Wikipedia: “String theory is a model of fundamental physics, whose building blocks are one-dimensional extended objects called strings, rather than the zero-dimensional point particles that form the basis for the standard model of particle physics.” Fascinating, but the real fascination for me is in the story of Percy Paul, of whom they say:
”His ability to think creatively in this world may (theoretically) partially be a result of Bipolar Disorder, but more importantly, his potential to continue to work in this area is severely jeopardized by the same affliction.”

So many of us know the implications of that statement. If anyone sees this special, let us know. I’ll be watching to see if it ends up on You Tube.

Does anyone else have any stories to share? Post them on your own SharePost, then come back here and post a link so we call all read it.

I saw it.  An excellent show.  A textbook example of stability's stupour vs madness' brilliance.  Also superbly illustrates the stigma with which our society hammers us bipolars.

stigma is bad when one is bipolar or what ever mental illness. They never visit when in hospital. I recently had kidney trouble and had many more visitors.

Percy,

That was an excellent documentary.  Thank you for sharing that with us, and for agreeing to share this portion of your life with the world.
