People with bipolar disorder have traits and skills attractive to many employers. It might be the ability to work hard, or think creatively, or have a mind as sharp as a tack. Un-medicated we may be too volatile for the workplace. Medicated, we’re just one of the crowd. Once again, the bipolar paradox.
Finally, could there be a setting more applicable to the bipolar paradox than the academic world? It’s like putting a kid in Disney World. Intellect and hard work are rewarded, sleep is intermittent at best, gratification and feedback comes quickly. Caffeine, alcohol, and drugs aren’t just tolerated, they’re almost expected. Behavior issues are often overlooked. That is, until it’s known a person has bipolar disorder. Then it all changes. The bipolar paradox.
The more I think about this, the more I realize that to really understand the disorder, you need to embrace the paradox. Is it possible to truly understand it otherwise?
So leave a comment and tell me what you think. Am I in a philosophic funk? Tell me. Challenge the basis of the paradox. Or, give your own examples of the paradox. I’m interested in everyone’s feedback.
