There’s a lot of top 10 lists out there to help you decide if you have bipolar disorder, but being the “expert” I am (wink), I decided to come up with my own. Here are the Top 20 Reasons You Know You Have Bipolar Disorder:

  • You’ve gone from deep depression, to mania, and back to depression again. And it’s not even lunchtime.

  • When you stop talking, it’s time to increase the anti-depressant dosage.

  • Instead of looking at the weather in the morning. you look at moon phases, mood charts, remaining meds… That is, if you can get out of bed.

  • The pharmacist stops trying to explain side effects of your meds, and starts asking you for information.

  • You can identify medication, in a totally dark room, merely by shaking the container.

  • You can’t resist that mega screen plasma TV at the electronics mart, and put it on your already maxed card. 24 hours later, after a sleepless night, you’re trying to return it.

  • You can recite half of Homer’s Iliad, but can’t remember where you put your keys.

  • After procrastinating for 28 days, you finish a month-long project in 30 hours – nonstop.

  • You’ve been told to “just snap out of it!” more than 3 times already today.

  • You have your pharmacist on speed-dial.

  • You think half of the people in the world are bipolar, but question your own diagnosis.

  • Less than a month into the new year, and you’ve already spent the entire year’s budget.

  • You know more about mood disorders than your physician.

  • Your drugs help you achieve reality, not escape from it.

  • You spend more than three hours a day watching Home Shopping Network.

  • Extreme sports? Hell, getting out of bed is an adventure.

  • If you have an important event in the morning, you stay up all night rather than risk over-sleeping.

  • Do you have anti-psychotics within reach right now? Uh-huh, I thought so.

  • Your medicine cabinet is stocked better than a small-town pharmacy.

And finally, the number one way to tell you might have bipolar disorder…

  • Let’s do it again!
