Revelation.....

By Britt365 Saturday, February 09, 2008

Hey everyone- Today I had what Oprah calls an "Ah ha moment." It was awesome...... I don't know where it came from but here it is........ So for the past 3 days I have gotten headaches- like almost migraines. Now this got my attention- because I never get headaches, not even stress headaches atleast after I started on my meds summer 2003. I have been on the same meds since then. Doses have been altered here and there- but not much. I've only ever met with one Phycologist/phychiastrist......

So anyway- the last time I felt this way was right when we ended up changing up my meds at one time. My body is trying to tell me something. I am going to call around for doctors in my area on Monday; throught this work week- that specialize in the treatment of Bipolar I. II. or whatever. I mean, so much has changed in my life in the last 2 years- my boyfriend whom I've lived with for the past 2 years even said he's certain that I have become immune to the lithium(I take 1,200 mg. per day) It's a life saver- if someone tells you what they see in you. Now since Lithium is the main med I take- I am interested in the "replacement meds out-there." I have been google'n recently- but mostly I'm printing out information on the alternative drugs. I was brain washed by my doctor, funny how that works in life. I have high hopes for a time release tablet of some sort. In hopes that the medication can and will hold me threw the entire day- until the next dosage at dinner. Right now- anything sounds better than what I'm on now. I heard Ambian CR is a great sleep-aid.

So if anyone is taking a non-narcotic that is working for them- as far as stablizing the mood and the high manic sides of depression etc. please fill me in. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for reading again,

I take Neurontin and it has been real helpful for me.  I do not know if this is a narcotic or not.  I tried to take lithium but it was not good to me and I ended up on the emergency room.  Ahhh, the life of a B/P person!  I seem to be doing the minute by minute program today.

Nope Alice...Neurontin isn’t a narcotic medication and was first introduced as an anti-seizer medication. What it also helped although not initially prescribed for is bipolarism as a stabilizer and pain management. Hope its working for you.

Hi Eric- so do you know of any other treatment options for Bipolar- other than Lithium being the main "problem solver" so to speak. ??? I would appreciate any info you may have. The more I have going into the doctor the better off I am I figure. Right now I take Seroquel for sleeping; lamictal with the lithium threwout the day. Thanks again....

Hi Britt365,

I know I'm coming into this a bit late....and of course, I wonder what course of action you have taken since Feb 9.

I will say re: Lithium that, like any drug, it can stop working all on it's own.  If you are still on the medication, then you probably know that there are two ways to determine if Lithium is working. 1. symptoms 2. blood test (serum lithium level). The blood level is the clincher. Typically .5 to 1. is within the theraputic range. Below .5 not effective and above 1.1 beginning to become toxic - this is the "watch closely" indicator.

So, just a FYI to you and others who may have the same problems. Be well.

Peace

Thanks Cynthia- for your e-mail. Yea In July/Aug. I am due to go back home to Washington to insure that I recieve my refills on all my perscristions. I had no idea of all the important numbers that indicate how well/not so well the lithium is working. I just feel like my body is used to it- thus not fully helping me stay chemically balanced. It's tough living so far away from my primary doctor. But when I go back this summer I will get a blood test done. So we'll see where things go from there. I will keep you posted. And sooner or later I will find a doctor down here in Florida. yey lol.

Thanks again,

Britt365:

You cannot wait until July/Aug to have your blood work done. If you see a pdoc get a script, really, I'm not kidding. If you haven't been checked in over 6 months or you feel differently...you need the vampire!!!
