There is stilll hope

By shari Tuesday, December 25, 2007

I was diagnosed with bi-polar illness in 1981. My first hospitalization was terrible. I was over medicated and brought down too quickly from my psychotic state. As most of us have experienced to a greater or lesser degree---I went broke and had to declare bankruptcy. Long story short, after being diagnosed with diabetes insipitus (as a result of the lithium), i only have 50% use of my kidneys and  i am hyperthyroid. My mother committed suicide one year prior to my only manic episode.

It is now almost 2009. I am happy to say, I have sanity. Due to the great works from the best shrinks and psychomarphacologists.

imbahk, I can relate to your story.  Misdiagnosed with major depression in 1983, correctly diagnosed with bipolar sometime in the 90's.  Was over/under medicated several times, went bankrupt, lost my Mom to natural causes (my deepest sympathies to you).  And I'm sorry to hear about your kidneys and thyroid.  But hurray for your sanity!  You go girl!  I'm still in a bad place, but I do have that hope.  I'm learning it from people like you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We have gone back and forth on the bipolar diagnosis with my son since he was 11.  Doctors waffled on the "is he adhd or is he bipolar"? question for years.

He is now 16 and it took a psychotic event to bring it to the forfront.

As frustrating as it has been and as guilty as I feel for him going misdiagnosed for so long, I realize that we are lucky.

Nothing horrible really happened to him and now we know what we're dealing with and we have him with the "right" specialists.

I'm sorry it took so long to get you stable but I am so glad that you are now.

I love your attitude of being mentally healthy despite your physical problems.

In the end, I guess it really is worth the struggle and time it takes to get there.

Thank you so much for your message of hope.
