Hi,
I'm a newbee, I found this site i was pleased to share. I live with someone
who is bi-polar and goes on and off his meds and makes my life so crazy.
His sleeping patterns are so difficult , wish I new the answer as to how to
get him to realize in order to feel well he must take his meds all the time.
Anyone with suggestions it would help . Please share.

I think one of the most common traits assoicated with our illness is either self-medicating, deciding we know more than the doctors or the feeling were cured and stop taking our meds. Some people fianlly grow out of that stage and some remain there their whole lives.
Here is what I feel is the second most common reason people stop taking their medications....it causes weight gain or they feel it has caused them to be someone they are not. Early on in the medication regiment...new meds can really throw you for a loop. I can remember one medication in perticular that took almost three months to finally get used too. I was always light headed, falling down and dared not speak for fear of loosing my train of thought....it was like poof, what was I saying?
Most people stop the treatment before their bodies can adjust. I always tell my counterparts to stick with it for at least 6 months....if its not working, then sit down with your pdoc and come up with something else. The majority of people are looking for quick fixes and they are just not out there, everything takes time.
Now as to advice for you to help him? I have none, becuase he is the only one to decide to take or not take his medications. Now if it is becoming to much for you to ride his roller coaster....step off. Personally I would walk away in the opposite direction thinking about whats best for me. I am the first person willing to lend a hand to anyone in need...but they also have to show an effort of trying to help themselves and he is not.
Good Luck
