It's 2009 and most American families are facing many problems they didn't face in 2008.  A crumbling economy, high unemployment rates, and home values dropping can all make it tough to get into the spirit of the season.  Most of these problems are self-explanatory, but those who are living ...

I totally agree with your findings and research.  I used to be around a lot of negative people. Once I learned how to wean myself from them and find joyful spirits, life got a lot easier for me. Naturally optimistic, I love brightening the day of total strangers I meet.  Can't tell you how many people have said the following words to me which MAKE MY DAY:

"Oh, you've just made my day!"

    Thank you for your words,

I also totally agree with the report. I have suffered from depression for more than 20 years (and that it just how long it has been diagnosed) and some days it has felt like the whole house of cards was getting ready to drop onto me. Then somebody would give me a smile, and to me it made a lot of difference.

When I am feeling well, I find it quite heartening the smiles that you get back from people you "smile to first". Clerks if you smile when dealing with them, from those you open doors from, or just from people you walk by while downtown.

If it made me feel good, maybe it will make somebody I smile at first, feel better too.

This also means that when someone lives with a grandfather who wishes loudly to die and mother who has always something to complain, no, yell about, is going to be less optimistic.
