My heart goes out to you and your family for what you have
been through. I guess I am not really convinced the diagnoses fits, but what
does that really matter. This woman…you wife has gone through so much in such a
short time. Most that deal with having seizers also have the tendency to
recluse and become withdrawn from people, even family members because of what
they feel as the embarrassment.
Even grand mal seizers can and are controlled by medications
that are now on the market and I would have asked for a second and third opinion
prior to any brain surgeries taking place. I can’t even imagine what your wife
would have been going through. What I can tell you is that for the average person,
this would have pushed them over the edge.
Your wife had part of her brain removed…she has had
abilities that she used to be able to do on a daily bases taken away from her
that used to be easy to becoming insurmountable and unattainable. It has also
caused her to become dependent on others just to get by on a daily bases. I
would expect symptoms of depression in the beginning having it turn toward anger
as time went by. Anger at the doctors for what they have done to her and it is
my assumption that this has also taken from her the ability to cope with things
in what we call a normal way.
I am not trying to take anything away from you and what you
have been through….been there and I know it has not been easy on you nor the
kids. You are a trooper for still standing by your wife through thick and thin
and it is very commendable. I even know
that you have had thoughts of just walking away because at times it has become
too much at times on you and the kids…it’s only natural.
So where do we go from here? Understand that doctors are not
always right and you are going to have to advocate for your wife when she can’t.
Just do go along with her being used as a guinea pig and also question the
diagnoses that just got labeled on her. The only good thing is that the
majority of mood stabilizers used to treat bipolarism are also used in
controlling seizer activities.
Your wife now has a brain injury directly caused by the
medical establishment and it can’t be undone. She is going to have to relearn
new coping skills of how best to deal with things we take for granted. I would
suggest getting a good therapist that specializes in bran injuries. I would
also suggest that she get into a program that will help teach her how to do
what we would call meaningless tasks through programs offered like RSA
Traumatic Brain Injury Regional Centers. Go ahead and Google the above to find
a program near you.
I would also suggest that you get in and be seen by a therapist.
It is not a sign of weakness in doing so, and it will help release all those
feelings that you have held back that is now taking a toll on you. You can’t
help your wife if you become ill…stress is a killer. Good luck and keep your
chin up….better days are coming.
