caring for kids with bipolar disorder

By daddio24 Thursday, October 23, 2008

I am afriad that my son may have been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. He just seems depressed all the time and I think he may be on the wrong medication. how many doctors do most parents visit before accepting the diagnosis?

I know some parents who have seen 4-5 and still dealing with issues. Its important to communicate with the doctor on their issues as well, maybe just adjusting dosages is all that is needed. but then again it is tough finding a good doctor, period.

I have a 17 years old that may also have been misdiagnosed.  We've visited 2 primary care physicians, 2 psychiatrists, 2 therapists, been to a psychiatric hospital.  The last therapist we've visited told us to take her to a neurologist to check for other possible causes.  We're ok with bipolar, but just to make sure that this is the right diagnose.

We've just visited endocrinologist and will test her for various stuffs-thyroid, cortisol, B12 to name a few.  She has a few blood tests before, and is a border line anemic.  We'll also see a neurologist next week.

My daughter was depressed for a long time, was previously diagnosed with severe depression.

Good luck

We had ours checked out medically first.  We had complete bloodwork with thyroid panel.  We are on our 3rd psychiatrist and really feel comfortable with this group.  They had us fill out a lengthy history, looked at all his previous records, and spent 45 minutes talking to us at the first visit.  Ours is diagnosed with a mood disorder, unspecified and ADHD.  We don't care so much about the label.  It's the treatment that counts.  He's doing great now. He's not on anything that makes him sleep 14 hours a day or affects his appetite in any way.  He's not depressed anymore and he's not having meltdowns anymore.

Good luck with your search.  If you're uncomfortable with your child's treatment, don't hesitate to contact the doctor and say so.  If he's not being helped, find someone who will help him.  It's so important to find someone who will listen and wants to help.
