I came across a scrap of paper in one of my books. On it I had written a quote that I must've found somewhere back during my hospital-work days.
"I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world would be wise. To suffering must be added mourning, understanding, patience, love, openess and the willingness to remain vulnerable." ---Anne Morrow Lindbergh

It's kind of a pet peeve of mine, the saying that "What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger" (I've joked, "Can't I just be a happy, weak person?" LOL). But all joking aside, there are some things in life that are just plain painful and damaging. Suicide and rape come to mind. I don't believe such things make us stronger. They cause real damage.
However, I think many of the 'trials and tribulations' of life really do lead to real wisdom and compassion for others. It's no wonder that we can get real comfort from others who have 'been there'. It's kind of funny, I have made many of my best friends through helping each other through the tough times. And although "Ignorance is bliss", my recovery of chronic back pain has truly taught me a lot, and I have been known to say I am 'grateful' for the experience. But I'm not 'quite there' LOL with the Bipolar!!
