Q: I have a couple of family members who were never diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but who definitely exhibited symptoms of the condition.  My husband has one family member who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well.  We’d like to start a family, but I’m afraid that our ...

I know I shouldn't, but I'm a Mom.  I wondered if there is a difference in the genetic quality of bpd with onset in youth opposed to adulthood.  By which I mean, if your bipolar disorder was early in onset, will it be more likely to be passed genetically to your children?  Also, if you have controlled bipolar disorder, will this be less likely to cause onset in your children?  And finally, what are a couple of key signals (in my children) that I should consult a counselor?

I have two children who also exhibit symptoms occasionally AND I have been diagnosed with BPI.  We are currently participating in a family inheritance study through the University of Pittsburgh, but the researchers so far have not determined or have called to my attention that my children need intervention.  Should I be concerned even though I see periodic symptoms and the researchers do not?

My mother has bp 1 & committed suicide when I was 15.  I had many suicide attempts myself & was finally diagnosed with bp 1 when I was 46.

Both my children have had major depressive episodes so I fear they may develop bp.  I have participated in a genetic study in regards to bp since genes obviously have had a geat impact on my family.
