Is there a teen to young adult website?

By Optimistic Mom Coach Monday, November 12, 2007

Hi,

As a mother of a 22 year old adult child with bi-polar disorder, I am curious to know if there is a website where she can share her thoughts and ideas?  I am thinking of a networking site that also has the online presense of educators and experts that volunteer time.

Thanks,

Carol

I think it might be a great idea Molly.  Big Smile

I know that at times she feels like she is alone with how she feels and her struggles she faces in life.  Hmmm...we could start with a blog!  Have you ever visited any blogs?  You know what they are, right?  I am thinking you could both probably start a blog together.  I could help.  They are free and it would probably lead to other positive experiences for you both.  What do you think? What questions do you have?

Hi Molly, I just purchased the domain bipolarteentalk.org.  We taking our first steps to creating a website dedicated to teens who have the illness. What do you think?  Big Smile Carol

Hi Carol and Molly,

I'd love to hear about your experience with this. I can't seem to get my bipolar daughter to communicate with others who have this illness. I think it would be helpful to her, but she dismisses the idea. She is in her 30s and not a good candidate for your blog, but I'm interested in the idea. Maybe she would be open to a blog. She's having a very difficult time at the moment.

Good luck!

Yes, a blog would be great.  A voice of a young professional would be great!  You daughter is the same as other young women.  She wants to be successful...while they have the illness, they still have the ambitions that other people have.  Molly can probably confirm this.  Her illness isn't who she is, it is something she has to manage.  I have already spoken with my daughter.  She is very open to the Blog and/or the bipolarteentalk.org site I plan to create.  It is in the concept phase so we can always put another spin on it. How do young adult professional women mentor younger women with this disorder?  Hmmm...you got me thinking here.

Hi Carol! I didn't mean to suggest that my daughter be invovled in a teenblog. I'd simply like to see how your blog experience goes and, if my daughter is ever be open to communicating with others (she, unfortunately, has not been so far), I could suggest she start a blog for professionals.

I don't think it would be appropriate for someone like my daughter, who is so much older than the teens, to be involved in a teen blog. She is not stable enough herself to be giving advice, or sharing experiences, or influencing teens in any way. I say this as a loving mother. My daughter shares a lot with me and the content, language and tenor of what she shares -- especially lately -- is not what I would want my teen to hear! She's kind of "out there" at the moment, not manic, but hypomanic, not her usual self. She also does not subscribe to lifestyle recommendations for bipolar individuals that seem to me to be imperatives to a healthy life, such as, keeping sleep/wake cycles regulars, monitoring external stimuli, and recognizing what your triggers are, and other measures mentioned in the "Living Well..." book by John Momanamy. I am trying to encourage my daughter toward these ideas, but she's very resistant.

I'd love it if you would keep in touch. Thanks for responding!

Hi DaisyMom,

How is your daughter doing?  How are you?

I am hoping you are both well!

Tell her to check on MySpace.  I went there and searched for bipolar and there are like 2000 groups for various bipolar related subjects.  I'm sure she could find one there that she may be able to connect with a crowd her age, etc....hope that helps.

I am also a mom of a 22 year old adult son diagnosed with bipolar.  He is currently living at home with us.  We are trying to find a program - some kind of structure to give him access to peers in a similar situation.  We are totally lost.  There is really nothing out there that I can find to meet his needs.  Any ideas?

Not sure to tell you the truth! I see the earlier post where someone mentioned "myspace" but I haven't had a chance to research.  I don't think that is the environment I am attempting to create for the bi-polar group I had in mind.  My goal is a non-profit such as the bipolarteentalk.org.  I want to capture the 18-25 year old group initially.  They are often in a similiar stage in life with similiar struggles.  Let's stay in touch! I may call this company whos site we are on now.  They have a wonderful format but they do not attract the target audience of your son and my daughter :)
