All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

So, I'm new to the site ... and, well, new to bipolar. It seems to have hit me like a brick. At first, there was "The Great Depression" finding out the prognosis ... then relief set in. Not everyone thinks like this and there IS more to life. And now, I finally have an answer. Haha, there is no brown foam in my brain ... that, my friends, is exciting news. This, I can deal with.

My major problem right now is work. Forcing myself to go is like forcing an 11 year-old that is being picked on a school to go. (And I know all about that.) I have a great job, that I never really enjoyed. The benefits are great, the monotony is torturous, and the pay is wonderful. Problem is, you don't get paid if you don't show up. I am all out of 40 hours of sick leave and 100 hours of vacation and I've only had them for 4 months ... I have to wait until March for any more. I can't loose this job ... but I also CAN'T go to work. It seems physically impossible.

My doctor just put my on the abilify. It sounds like a magic drug. Too good to be true, in fact. So maybe I should just hang on and give it a chance. But in the mean time ... does anyone have any suggestions? Did anyone have the same problem and know how to over-come? Please tell me your secret! HELP!

Hello and welcome to the site.  My only advice to you is to keep taking your meds and in time they should start to help you feel better. Meds can take so long to work the first ever lot of meds i was on took a while to work  but then i was put on new meds and they worked a lot quicker. Abilify is a goog med to take at least i found it to be when i took it. Sorry i cant give you any surgestions about work i have had more jobs then hot dinners.  Its really all about finding what works for you and what dosen't.

While that's a helluva easy statement to say, it's the only one I can say. Not all of us ever are able to return to the "working world" depending on our degree of BiPolar. Many of us live on Social Security diability, SSI, the states welfare system in some form or another i. e. food stamps, etc...  We may work part-time since we aren't able to deal with the stress that ovewhelms us in a 40 hour work week. This is just a consideration and may not be you.

BiPolar meds. take time to build up in our system plus we usually need more than 1 med. to balance the chemicals in our brain.

I hope you find the right combo of meds. the first time out.

Blessed Be!

I am 61yo,BP and now dealing with 23yo BP son...work is tuff..the best I found as a nurse was to do home health...did not stay in the office all day...essentially made my own schedule and had a little flexibility..being confined all day and having no flexibility is hard...I did not do well with early am..I know benefits are crucial..see if you can work 3 12 hour days or 4 10 hour days...gives you a little more time off or some places will still give benefits with 32 hour work week

God's blessings to you...do not give up...there are lots of great years ahead

Maybe you should try working part time from home.
