Topamax/Geodon

By bunny30 Monday, December 10, 2007

I have a 16 year old.  Looking to find out what others have used for BP.

what has helped? What has hurt?

My daughter currently takes 20 mg Geodon; 60 Adderall; 100 mg Wellbutrin.  400 mg Serequel at bedtime.   The Geodon has caused her to gain 45 pounds.  The doc want to switch to Topamax.  Anyone ever take this?

My 16 year old son is doing pretty well on Celexa 20 mg and Lamictal 25 (will be increased to 100 by the end of the month).  He's also taking Seroquel 150 mg at night but that will be decreased and eliminated by the end of the month.

He seems pretty stable already.  Hopefully this will get even better as we increase the Lamictal and decrease the Seroquel.

from personal experience its not the geodon that made her gain weight! its the 400mg of seroquell.  I was on 600mg and i gain 70 pounds! I switch to geodon and topamax and have not seen any weight gain! Hope this helps.  Also the topamax helps with weight loss.

Bunny,

There are a lot of medications out there to treat Bipolar. Your daughter has to find out what works for her (be it a single med or some combination of meds).  It's common knowledge that Seroquel packs on the pounds.  I use drugs.com to research medications.  You can even look at drugs "by condition", choose Bipolar and it will show you all of the meds, their side effects, and their rating (independently rated by Bipolar sufferers).

We can't tell you what your daughter should take.  All Bipolar meds affect different people differently.  I'm glad you want her off of Seroquel, the massive weight gain only makes the patient even more depressed/low self-esteem.

I'm taking Lamictal (mood stabalizer) and Geodone (anti-psychotic, anti-mania) and it works great FOR ME (not necessarily for your daughter).  Lamictal is the only medication that was designed specifically for Bipolar sufferers.

I have a blog if you're interested, http://bipolarchristopher.wordpress.com

Hang in there, it's a roller-coaster (meds for Bipolar),

Chris
