Holiday Stress...Coping

By HeyJude Monday, November 22, 2010

Most of us have learned many different skills that might help us deal better with our disorder.  We've had exposure to many different styles of therapy and therapists, unique doctors, a miriad of classes and lectures, books, online info, all aimed at giving us the tools we need to live healthy lives.

Unresolved stress is often at the root of many illnesses.  When I am experiencing high stress my brain functions differently.  Sometimes things get worse and I get sick.  Stress is the enemy.  We all have it.  And we all have to deal with it in our lives.

The Holiday Season is "STRESS CITY" for most people.  There's the traffic pileups, the long lines when shopping, the what to buy for whom, the spending when money's tight, the parties you're expected to attend and could care less about (my nemesis), the cooking and baking that's expensive and time consuming, those disastrous family gatherings, and playing hostess when you don't really care about doing so.  And there's lots of other crap that takes its toll on us during the Ho Ho season.

We all have skills we know that work or have worked in the past. Here are just a few small things that help me during the holidays.  Please feel free to add to the list.  Someone may benefit from your suggestion.  Thanks...Judy

1. Reading calms me.  If I spend just half an hour each day with a book, it makes a my day go better.  Books are available at thrift shops and used book stores and cost very little.  I get hardcovers for 20 cents.

2.  At least twice a week I take baths rather than a shower.  Candles and/or incense are good aromatherapy.  My bath calms and relaxes me better than just about anything else.

3.  I turn off the TV and listen instead to music that I like.  It's a good change and a comfort.  Josh Grobin and Lady Antebellum are favorites of mine.Laughing

4.  I try to say "NO" more often to invites and personal favors during the holidays.  It's always been difficult for me to opt out in these situations.

These four things are helpful.  These four things are quite simple, but help me get thru. What works for you?........Judy
