I am having difficulity obtaining health insurance since I have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, seems like I am uninsurable with most of the large insurance carriers.  Has anyone else had this problem, and if so is their a solution?

I haven't really had to deal with this yet but I'm sure it will come up in the future.  Have you tried applying for state medical assistance?

I've got Medicare and they pay 50% of any psych-related costs, and have a yearly maximum of how much you can spend (can't remember what it is).  But state insurance like Mom said might be a good idea.  Eligibility is based on your income and some other things, but they pay out really good.  Now life insurance, once I let the fact out of my BP, they immediately ask about suicide attempts.  Since I had one, they practically hang up on me.  NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) has been working on passing some legislation to make the insurance companies treat mental health illnesses as a "normal" illness and to pay the costs fairly.  I know that doesn't help you now, but I can see it happening in the future.  In the meantime, the state may be your best bet.  Good luck.

Miles, i can't find health insurance since I was diagnosed with bp.  A dianosis of depression was bad enough when I was working, but when I went on disability and lost my insurance, I became uninsurable...that is, I could be insured if i was willing to pay  horrendously high premiums and medication caps...  So I don't have health insurance now and hope i don't have a disaster happen.  I can only hope you are luckier than i was!  I don't know about any plans other than medicaid and medicare that are state/federally funded.

Hi, I have not had problems with health insurance, but I just read on another post HR676.com.  I have not read it yet, but I believe that insurance will be more readily available for us.
