Sad Hi, I've had bipolar for about 10 or 12 years. I have a question. Does anyone have a over spending habit that actually puts you into deep debt? Or have you ever just decided to do something bizarre, and just do it? I really need to talk to someone else in my position because I don't think many people understand how it is and how we that have this are feeling.

Sounds like mania might be starting.  You need to call your doctor.

Ya, those are symptoms of mania.  Check in with your Pdoc like Hopeful mom said.  I spent so much money I had to file bankruptcy.  Now I've got a credit card that I keep maxing out.  Just can't help myself.  But I have been throwing out those tempting catalogs without even opening them, so that's a plus.  But then there's shopping on the internet...Furious

(PS)  I usually don't leave my apt. and I afraid of flying.  So what did I do?  I went to Australia to meet a man I met in a chat room.  That was pretty bizzare.  It was a miserable trip, and I felt very remorseful afterward.

I think it was reported that now business actually get close to 50% of their sales on-line. I think it’s more convenient for most that lead unusual hours or have little ones to home where they can’t just up and head to the department store to shop. I’m actually the other way in that I wait a few weeks after Christmas and then hit the malls for up to 80% off retail for next years Christmas list. People don’t need to know that you saved a bundle on the gift…only you and your accountant.

Shrimp on a Barbie? Stardust…you aren’t the first nor will you be the last to try finding love on-line. Most end in major disappointment in that they turn out nothing like they were in a chat room. The draw to most chat rooms is the anonymity of being able to be what you wished you were. There are also some real losers there. Your better off looking locally and going on blind dates from friends…at least safer and less expensive.

Could be a slight increase above the center line in hypomania/ mania…or just plan poor money choices. Some people just never learned how to budget and stay within a budget. All we hear on TV is to spend now and not to worry till later…do you think all the people that were hit with the housing market drop manic?

Is this something out of the normal or more in line with the way you tend to budget money? I have a friend that actually planned his life around the 7 year bankruptcy law in that he would max everything out on the credit cards to coincide with filing. He wasn’t bipolar just not so good with money.

I have a tendancy yes to over spend and yes my family had to file bankruptcy.  It wasn't necessarily solely due to my over spending or impulsive need to have things.  My husband was and is very immature and irresponsible about money consistently.

His immaturity and my impulsivity to buy - even stuff I didn't need or really want - was a bad combination.  Yet, I've managed to keep the roof over our heads and the electricity on.

I wanted to just take off out of the house naked and dance in the backyard while it rained.  One day, summer before last, I did - in broad daylight - around my birdfeeder.  I sang, hummed, kicked, flipped, and danced.  The mosquitos and my yard cats apparently liked the show - I got many many mosquito bites (in places they normally don't go - ouch).

At first, I didn't realize I was doing or had done it - it was only after my daughter yelled at me that I realized I did so.

Go figure...

i am on medication and i just wondered if anyone else has the spending problem and what they do about it

I have had Bi-polar (the mixy kind)for over 20 years. They have just decided I had the mixy type by the way. I have had mutiple shrinks and psychologists. Yes - shopping is a big problem. I have also been married 3 times-guess I shop for them too.lol My shopping was so bad I would put cotton balls on layaway because they were on sale!!  The words of advice my second husband gave my third were-- Love her enough to take the checkbook and cards away when she needs you to. That works out for the best. He also has to be the one to do the online shopping because that is my NEW habit. I hate the stores and I will sit on the computer and make carts of items. He gets to say nay or yea. It is the agreement we made if I was to keep my laptop air card during a crisis or lose it with the checkbook and credit cards.

Thanks for the advice re shopping. I have a problem with my husband doing the shopping and the check book. He recently had a stroke and effected his memory, so I have to do the bills and the checkbook and the shopping. On-line is the worse thing, I think it's because I don't see any money or credit cards swithching hands and so I don't consider the bills later on. I even looked up over shopping on the net, but not much help there. Talking with my dr. sometimes helps but I also have other health problems and can't get around well, that's why I though this site would help me understand if others go through similiar things. Thanks for all your help, keep chatting.
