Bipolar Disorder Medications: Klonopin (Clonazepam)

By Marcia Purse, Health Guide Wednesday, October 05, 2011
Klonopin is an anti-anxiety drug that's often prescribed for anxiety accompanying bipolar disorder, panic disorder and some seizure disorders. Its generic name is clonazepam. Klonopin works by lowering abnormal electrical activity in the brain.   This drug is also sometimes prescribed to treat...

Hi Marcia

This is a timely post for me as I have recently been taking Klonopin at night for sleep.

It works well for sleeping.  But for me...I have noticed more depression and anxiety symptoms when I wake up if I take the Klonopin.  It seems that these can be side effects.  I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

My neurologist also gave me a prescription for ambien.  It works as well but I am a little leery of the possible side effects of possibly sleep walking or doing other things in my sleep and not being aware.

Thanks for writing about this medication.  I hope other members chime in with their experiences.  I am not sure if Klonopin is for me.

Undecidedhi i've been taking clonazepam for a year now along with zoloft which seems to do nothing for me now. went to another doctor and they put me on ambien and trazone for sleep which didnt take care of the anxiety and depression so now i'm a bigger mess than i ever was. the doctors act like you just want some pills without really looking at u to see if u really need help..

I like Klonopin when I was allowed to recieve it.

Only problem was... the longer I took it the more tolerant I became.  So, to get the same effect (for anxiety and help with sleep onset), I had to titrate up more and more.

I eventually realized that I was having to take so much Klonopin each day to just get the mediocre relief I was once receiving when first taking... and I did not want to become "used" to it or "addicted" to it.  So, I stopped taking it all together.

I had been taking it, as prescribed, for several months at that time.  Each day, as prescribed and built up a huge tolerance.

Now.. some years later and in the need of an occasional PRN

I'm no longer allowed to receive any benzodiazepine... current doctors all refuse to prescribe them because each have asked how I did on Klonopin and on Valium?  I've been honest.

Used to be, docs would just hand out Xanax and Ativan and Klonopin at most every appointment.  Was not unheard of to get a script, they'd even ask if you thought you might could use one?

Not anymore.

I'm on my own to come up with "coping" skills and "avoidance" techniques to known triggers.

Really could use a PRN benzo.

When I became tolerant to clonapan I became so depressed and tried to commit suide and cut my thoat amongst other things . I went physco because I was withdrawing at the prescribed dose. I was diagnosed with so many disorders while on it. A year of weaning off i havent had one suicidal thought. I still have manic and depressed episodes but I dont want to slice my throat open just to see if i had any feelings

I am using it as a "when needed" drug. It helps when i start to become too angry or on the point of bursting, as happens in times of an episode change. However at times i wonder whether it also has a placebo effect cos you know that you may burst and you are taking this medicine knowing it! Handy!

Thank God for Klonopin.  I've been taking it for around a year on an as-needed basis, which for me is at night to help me calm down enough to sleep.  I have akithesia (or however it's spelled.)  It drives me crazy.  Sometimes I take a dose during the day if I'm in high anxiety mode.  I take 0.5mg twice a day as needed.  For a while this year, about 3 months, I did w/o Klonopin to make sure I wasn't addicted.  I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms and did fine.  But when the anxiety returned, I asked my pdoc if I could start taking it again.  He wasn't too happy about it but didn't say no.  When you have really bad anxiety, something NEEDS to be done just so you can live a semi-normal life.  So you can sleep.  So you can sit still long enough to watch a TV program or read a book without pacing.

thank you for the positive Donna, my Dr. says the Klonipin is like a stiff drink which is far less intimidating to me, I hate taking meds!

I am moving and seem to have alot of underlying stress which gives me attacks, I took .5 today and feel pretty mellow.  I hope to have to use them as needed.
