Having a lifestyle of regular sleep, healthy food, and exercise, is important for most of us who are bipolar. I usually get this at home, but I’ve been traveling a lot lately and that really messes things up. We visited my sister in Kansas City and friends in Iowa City this past week, and they were all great hosts. That meant they plied us with tasty entrées like grilled steaks and shrimp, wonderful breads and cheeses, ice-cream and other deserts—everything we love to eat, but should only do in moderation.
In Kansas City, temps were in the hundreds most of the week, which forced us to stay indoors. We took a couple morning walks, and came back drenched in sweat. Iowa City was better, but we still did a lot more eating, drinking, talking and hanging around than we normally would. By staying up late, getting little sleep, eating and drinking too much, and not getting enough exercise, I was a wreck by the time we left.
The Philadelphia airport was chaos on the day we flew home. Thunderstorms there and elsewhere on the East Coast messed up flights and caused a number of them to be cancelled. Plus, there was no communication from US Air as to what was going on. Monitors either gave the wrong information or none, and I found myself wandering around the F terminal asking people at various gates, “Are you flying to Ithaca?” After having sat in the Kansas City airport for 3 hours, and then taking the 2 ½ hour flight to Philly, my head was too muddled to think of a more sensible solution. We finally made it home after midnight.
What I need to be careful about now, is giving myself time to recuperate. Usually I expect to jump right back into a work schedule, and then get depressed when I don’t have the energy to do that. Everything that’s piled up while I’ve been gone weighs on my mind. I haven’t even done our laundry yet, or read the mail. But hey, my mental health is more important than laundry. It can wait.
