Singing to relieve the word-blockages from Zonegran

By LadyBehindTheMask Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Hi, all. Back after a long hiatus. I just wanted to share something I've been trying that seems to be working.

I've been having a really rough time with word-blocking because of Zonegran ... which is for me not nearly so bad as Lithium in its overall cognitive impact, but it does have this one problem. And I find it embarrassing when I'm talking to someone and suddenly have to say "that place where we keep stuff cool" because I "can't find" the word "refrigerator." I feel like I'm going all Alzheimers, way too young.

Anyhow, I read about how singing is being used as therapy to help stroke patients recover language -- specifically to overcome word blockage. And I thought, "What the hey? Why not?" So I've been in the choir for six weeks and tonight was the first time in weeks I had anything like a word blockage ... and it was a word I don't really know ("yoga pants," which isn't what they were called when I bought them 10 years ago).

So ... and do, re, mi, fa! It can't hurt to try!
