quetiapine ( seroquel )
jasmine
Wednesday, June 06, 2007 at 10:06 AMHi Sharon,
Read your story with interest, I have suffered from BD for 7 years now, they tried all sorts of anti psychotics and antidepressants on me. About 4 years ago, after another failed attempt, my psychiatrist told me about Quetiapine, I have a track record of eating disorders, bulimia and anorexia nervosas, and this drug was the least, newest one on the market, to cause weight gain. In have been taking this drug since then in an increasing dose, I am on quite a high dosage, I struggle with my weight, but that's to keep my weight up, not gaining anything. I get a good sleep now and my mood swings have stabalised in a way I never thought possible. So, I advise you, when the time comes, when you feel it's right to change, give the Seroquel a try, it may not have the same result as with me, but hopefully it will help, I know how it feels to gradually return to work, I wish you well.
Take care
Jasmine

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 at 11:01 AMI actually heard that Zyprexa is given to those with eating disorders, to help them gain weight! That's how strong it is. Maybe worth a try for you. My pdoc said Zyprexa causes the most weight gain, and Seroquel is up there but not as bad(or good, depending how you look at it).
I will ask about Seroquel at my next apptmt, next week. My pdoc told me the average time people with BD need a meds change is about a year. I wonder why that is.
Are you working? I am at 2 full days/week, but I make it in about 70% of the time (miss 30% of the scheduled days).
Thank-you for your input.

Seroquel for Bipolar 1
Susan
Friday, November 30, 2007 at 10:56 PMI am taking 400mg.of seroquel at 9pm every night. I went in the hospitol back in February of this year and was placed on it along with depakote, zanaflex, and neurontin. I am now only on seroquel. I must say that seroquel has been the best medicine for managing my mixed episodes, mania, depression, and sleep disorder. I haven't had an episode of mania since I have been on it. I do get depressed now and then. I live alone. I sleep a little bit too much sometimes 12-13 hours at a time waking up once or twice in between. It gets depressing getting up at 1-3pm in the day and not having enough daylight to enjoy. It seems like by the time I am up and at em it is time to get ready for bed again. Now what is your comment on this? I had the p-doc cut my seroquel down to 200mg. and I could not go to sleep. We had to boost it back up to 400mg. With bipolar I think I would rather be somewhat depressed and sleeping than manic and not. Also, I am having a hard time losing weight. I guess it is better than zyprexia by the stories I hear of it. Good Luck! Susan

Saturday, December 01, 2007 at 10:48 AMI actually did give Seroquel a try last summer, and my pdoc had mentioned it has a shorter half-life, so that's why it can be more helpful for rapid cycling...somehow I didn't hear him say that I must (therefore) take it twice a day (my husband was there & reminded me - I don't know how I missed that). Anyways, I was only taking it once a day & felt wonderful within a day or two, but then crashed hard into depression a day or two later; it seems Seroquel taken only once a day seemed to induce rapid cycling. I know I should've maybe stuck with it & take it properly, but I was scared off of it & went back to my old mix. I do know Seroquel helps tremendously for a couple friends, so someday I might be open to trying it out, again.
I've been somewhat stabilized for a few months now (off work again since June), but my progress, although improved, has plateaued. I see the doctor in a couple weeks & I'm a bit apprehensive of him putting me on anything different. I'd rather play it safe and stay put with my meds. Even though it seems to be taking so LONG & sometimes I wonder "Is this as good as it gets?" I have a feeling it will still get better, though & I just have to be patient.
I've been off work (on & off) for 2 yrs now, and my disability benefits have been wonderful & straight fwd, so far. I hope it continues that way... I guess I 'performed' enough at work with my depression, mania and even psychosis one time, that they don't question my illness LOL!!!
